Methodists Launch a New Online Ministry

Posted by | .

The United Methodist Church is starting a multi-million dollar campaign to reach people on the internet. They are particularly targeting the younger generation which search the internet for all of lifes questions. According to one Methodist spokesman, Rev. Larry Hollon:

"We’re seeking to reach people who feel like something is missing from their life and are looking for meaning or purpose. Many of those people are searching online. We’ve chosen sites where they may be looking for something to fill a void in their lives – whether it’s travel, relationships, or something more spiritual."

The article cites a "Pew Internet & American Life Project" report that showed that 64 percent of Internet users in 2003 used the Web for spiritual and religious activities. Also, Twenty-eight percent of those poled said that they use the Internet to seek or exchange information about their own religious faith. Then another 17 percent claimed to use the Internet for finding information about where to attend religious services.

The United Methodist Church launched a website, UMC.org, in January 2007, with a new online ‘faith-based’ social networking community available 24-hours-a-day. The first of its kind for a major mainline protestant denomination.            *Top
