Disconnecting Once in a While

Disconnecting from the internet and blogging is actually a very good thing to do once in a while—especially on vacations.

A few years ago we on a cruise to Alaska with the extended family for a week. Actually promised my wife that I would stay away from computers for the duration—however even in the middle of the ocean you can get connected for a small fee in the richly appointed computer room on-board any modern cruise ship. Tried honestly to avoid that whole section of the ship but twice during the week I just had to see if all my websites were still there and all my pre-planned articles were properly posting. Spent less than 10 minutes both times—honest—and I’ve got the $40 computer bill to prove it! The wife loved it.

Another summer we spent a week in the motorhome near Yosemite National Park—guess what, the RV park (as most good RV parks do) had cable and Wi-Fi. So it’s really getting to be more difficult to totally disconnect unless you leave it all at home.

Every once in a while I will take a necessary weekend off from it all just to relax and get the creative juices flowing again. This is really important—to be in it for the long haul you must learn to disconnect once in a while no matter how painful. Vacations are not only beneficial for your off-line work but for your on-line longevity also.

What to do? Some just disconnect with no explanation at all. Others plan ahead and pre-write some posts to be published while they’re gone. Some responsible folks get guess writers to come aboard, others just write the quintessential ‘gone fishing’ post to hold down their spot while their gone. Others get up early and sneak on-line while the rest of the family is still sleeping.

Me? In the last 9 years I’ve actually done all-of-the-above.
