An article on Digital Evangelism Issues got me thinking about the importance of colors when it comes to blogs and websites: “The psychology of color in web design

After a little research I ran across a website called Color Matters .com with all sorts of articles about colors and how they affect us. Here’s one quote I found there:

“Research reveals people make a subconscious judgment about a person, environment, or product within 90 seconds of initial viewing and that between 62% and 90% of that assessment is based on color alone.”

Then I found this article on colors: “The Psychological Effects of Colors” with the following general guidelines for choosing the best possible colors:

· Black & Deep Red – sophistication & class

· White – purity (death for Eastern visitors – offset with reds or hot colors)

· Red – strength or power (can anger visitors or appear unsophisticated, offset with a neutral)

· Blue, Green, Turquoise – calm, nature, peace (Green connotes Islam for Hindus)

· Yellow – attracts attention & focuses the eye (too much can be devastating so use very sparingly)

· Pink – love, romance, passion

· Purple – dignity, nobility (accepted by Catholics, but many cultures find this color offensive)

· Brown – confidence and comfort

· Orange – food images, promotes hunger

· Gray – neutral color acceptable for almost any market

Personally I have put a lot of thought and effort into the colors showing on all of my blogs and websites. However I have not always been entirely successful.

Several years ago I received an email from one of the readers of this very blog protesting the colors I was using at the time. I was in the midst of changing the color scheme on this site and had not completed all of the color changes yet and several of the colors on the site actually clashed and obviously offended the reader.

It did teach me a valuable lesson. After that I have completed all of my changes on a test site before making any changes at all on any of my sites including any color adjustments.

There is this amazing world of colors 🙂
We choose them on the bases of ‘passion’ and ‘feelings’ we shared. This is the reason why red is for love, grey for dullness, white for purity/peace and green for freshness. Every color has a story to narrate and an idea to express. We just need understand it 🙂
Thanks for sharing this wonderful post. Glad reading it!
