The two authors really know what they are talking about when it comes to the WordPress blogging program. Good for beginners all the way through to advanced. Something for everybody.

Best part is that ‘free updates’ are included in the purchase. Initial price seems high till you take that into consideration. WordPress is constantly changing and these guys will keep you on top of any new versions when they come.

<<Here’s a link to where it can be purchased>>

Also here’s a link to the best review of the book that I have found –at BloggingPro: “WordPress Book Review: Digging Into WordPress” *Top

By Lisa Sabin-Wilson (Hoboken,NJ: Wiley Publishing, Inc., 2009, 394 pages)

Second Edition is quite an improvement over the already excellent original. It is the essential book for those using WordPress in publishing a blog. This edition is updated to feature version 2.7+ which reflects the last major program change.

The writer introduces one to the basic WordPress blogging program. Then follows with a section covering the WordPress hosted service, next a section on how to set up a ’self-hosted’ blog with the WordPress.org program, and finally, a chapter covering the WordPress MU program used in setting up and hosting entire blogging communities.

This is a great book for all those starting out with WordPress and explains in detail everything one needs to know to properly administer and publish on a blog using the program. For those who have been around a while, it outlines procedures for adding plugins and widgets to a WordPress site—also where to find the best WP themes.

Then, for the more advanced blogger, the book gives tips and procedures for making a blog unique and shows how to customize themes and templates. In easy to understand fashion, the writer presents all the basic CSS code needed to make changes that will make your WP blog different from all the rest.

WordPress For Dummies 2nd Edition is the most complete manual for using any WP program to date– providing good detailed help no matter whether you are just starting out, been doing it for a while, or more advanced—this is now the one essential book.

If you are just starting out however, you might also consider getting: "Building a WordPress Blog People Want to Read" by Scott McNulty. It is the easiest and best illustrated book on WordPress for complete beginners though it does reflect the earlier WP 2.6 rather than the current version. Nevertheless, WordPress For Dummies 2nd Edition is the best single overall book for all WP purposes. *Top

This is a great book for those starting out with WordPress. McNulty goes into detail on every facet of properly setting up a new WordPress blog. It has lots of illustrations to demonstrate every step. A real find for any beginner–wish this book was around 3 years ago when I set up my first blog, it sure would have been helpful and a real time saver.

The author does an exceptional job at explaining everything and making it all rather simple to understand. Valuable for WordPress.com bloggers but especially for WordPress.org users–if you don’t know the difference, McNulty will explain it to you.

While this is essentially a wonderful ‘beginners’ book, there are also a couple of chapters which are beneficial for intermediate bloggers. In Chapter 2, the author goes into detail on how to install a WordPress.org blog and set up a MySQL database–not something that I would suggest for beginners.

I would propose that it would be best for most to find a host that offers a one-click ‘auto-install’ option for installing a WordPress.org blog (via Fantastico or Simple Scripts)–far easier with less potential for trouble.

In Chapter 12 on themes, there are 8 pages on “Tweaking a Stock Theme“, the author gets into ‘The Loop’ and the code demonstrating how one could change and somewhat customize a stock WordPress theme and make it your own. This section is also for more experienced users.

The only drawback I see with the book is that it was published just before WordPress 2.7 came out, so all of the illustrations reflect the older 2.6 version. There were considerable changes made in the 2.7 version including a complete makeover of the dashboard. Nevertheless, this is the book that I would currently recommend for WordPress beginners. *Top
